I really can't understand what happened to Bishop Barron. I have the Word on Fire Bible and thoroughly enjoy his commentary. I guess it's just hard to think that the man who wrote those things is now saying such nonsense.
Do you see any value in reaching out to him? If he got flooded with Catholics explaining why his stances are harmful maybe he would think twice. But I’m also wary of lobbying a bishop like a politician, is it appropriate to be asking things of him when I’m not even in his diocese?
How about the part in the interview where Barron criticized the synod, doubling down on his rhetoric of socialism being the only economy that kills. He’s in naked dissent from the magisterium on this front, and something indeed needs to be done about it.
Bishop Barron. For years I've wondered could he really be Catholic? Does he believe in Christ's teachings? Does he have any compassion for human beings? And more recently, why is he still in the position he is in? I would support his removal.
Since Bishop Barron says he wants to dialogue, would you be willing to engage him on the specific examples of immigration law enforcement you mention, Matthew, or tell him his hostility toward critical members of his Church is a scandal? Perhaps you already have done? I contacted him once early in his arrival in MN via email to his diocesan secretary, but I have not been able to get through to him since. Nor am I able to argue the points calmly with him. This is the contact information from the diocesan website: "Bishop Barron can be emailed at bishop@dowr.org, or contacted through his secretary, Leandra Hubka, at lhubka@dowr.org or 507-516-6950." Thanks for considering it.
I once trotted out the idea of an AI pope ("His Holiness PiousGPT," to be precise) as a reductio ad absurdum for hyper-conservatives who think the pope's only job is to reaffirm what's already been taught "once and for all," since under those circumstances having a human as pope seems like a pointless liability. The theologian/blogger I was arguing with (let's call him "Edward Feser") wasn't impressed, but I was probably being excessively saucy. I'm glad to hear BenedictAI is basically just a search engine. That's about the only circumstance in which casual use of AI is justified.
As far as Barron goes... what's the point of having a clerical hierarchy if nothing short of blatant heresy or schism will prompt an intervention? It's not like there's nobody in charge of Barron who can tell him to stop palling around with Trump's entourage of cringing pseudo-Christian sycophants and blindly repeating administration propaganda. Is his archbishop sympathetic to Barron's activities? Does it not bother Leo that the second-most-famous Catholic bishop in the world is clearly letting politics (and politics that are in plain violation of the spirit of Catholic teaching) get in the way of his job?

I agree with you, Katie, that it would be worth a try. We aren't in his diocese, but we are included in his critique and affected by his words.

Great article. How sad to even mention these days the name Bp Barron! What a lost-case!!!
